It involves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodforlife.org.uk\/~\/media\/files\/marketing%20documents\/ffl-healthy-places-map.jpg\">multiple programs and local partnerships<\/a> that can be implemented by local authorities and customized to fit the needs and resources of the community. It includes providing support for schools, early childhood settings, hospitals, and caterers to improve the quality, healthfulness, and sustainability of the foods they serve.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project resulted from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodforlife.org.uk\/~\/media\/files\/policyreports\/food_for_life_report_2003.pdf\">2003 Food for Life report<\/a>, which exposed the poor quality of food in many UK schools.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How they do it:<\/strong> The Food for Life team partners with local authorities across the United Kingdom to create tailored programs to meet health-related goals for their specific area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Schools and Early Childhood: <\/em>Food for Life helps school and early childhood education staff increase their knowledge and skills around food education and food service. When schools sign up to join Food for Life, they become eligible to receive training, resources, and support to improve school food quality and to incorporate cooking and gardening lessons into the students\u2019 curricula. Food for Life awards are given to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodforlife.org.uk\/schools-and-early-years\/schools\/criteria-and-guidance\">schools<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodforlife.org.uk\/schools-and-early-years\/early-years\/criteria\">early childhood settings<\/a> that create an action framework and meet criteria related to food quality and sourcing, leadership, education, and community engagement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Catering: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodforlife.org.uk\/catering\/food-for-life-served-here\">Food for Life Served Here<\/a> is a certification that indicates caterers\u2019 commitment to climate and health through a focus on fresh, local, and sustainable foods. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodforlife.org.uk\/catering\/green-kitchen-standard\">Green Kitchen Standard<\/a> is awarded to caterers that make significant efforts to reduce energy, water use, and waste. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodforlife.org.uk\/catering\/our-training\">Training and consultation packages<\/a> on topics such as waste reduction, sustainability policies, menu development, and nutritional analysis are also available. Schools and hospitals are encouraged to work with food providers that have received Food for Life Served Here certification.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Culinary Training: <\/em>Food for Life uses a train-the-trainer model to help schools and businesses develop community cooking programs and culinary education lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Annual Campaigns: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fflgettogethers.org\/our-events\/plant-and-share-month\/\">Plant and Share<\/a> is Food for Life\u2019s annual month-long springtime campaign to encourage people to get involved in gardening. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodforlife.org.uk\/get-togethers\">Cook and Share<\/a> is an annual fall campaign that encourages people to come together as a community through cooking and conversation. She then became the Community Outreach Coordinator for a research study at NC State University that focused on increasing access to healthy foods and safe places to be active.
