{"id":18168,"date":"2023-03-27T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-27T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foodmedcenter.org\/?p=18168"},"modified":"2023-03-23T11:23:17","modified_gmt":"2023-03-23T15:23:17","slug":"food-as-medicine-spotlight-foodshare-sc-veggie-rx-produce-prescription-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foodmedcenter.org\/es_mx\/food-as-medicine-spotlight-foodshare-sc-veggie-rx-produce-prescription-program\/","title":{"rendered":"<strong>FoodShare SC VeggieRx: Produce Prescription Program Spotlight<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What they do:<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/foodsharesc.org\/\"><strong> <\/strong>FoodShare SC<\/a>, is partnering with the<a href=\"https:\/\/foodsharesc.org\/\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/scha.org\/\">South Carolina Hospital Association<\/a> (SCHA), the<a href=\"https:\/\/sc.edu\/\"> University of South Carolina<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabetesfreesc.org\/\"> Diabetes Free SC<\/a>, and the<a href=\"https:\/\/scorh.net\/\"> South Carolina Office of Rural Health<\/a> to study the health impact of a produce prescription program, VeggieRx, on patients with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Patients in four South Carolina counties will be eligible to participate if they are at least 18 years old, have pre-diabetes or diabetes, and are eligible for SNAP or Medicare. Twice a month for six months, participants will receive boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables with recipe cards and additional resources. The program will begin in April 2023 and run through September 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patients may also opt into an evaluation component of the program conducted by USC. The evaluation will include completing a qualitative survey prior to starting the program and another at the end of six months, as well as allowing their doctor to take their A1C, blood pressure, height, and weight before and after the program. USC uses the data they receive to measure the program\u2019s success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How they do it: <\/strong>Medical staff at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tidelandshealth.org\/\">Tidelands Health System<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spartanburgregional.com\/\">Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spartanburgregional.com\/umc\">Union Medical Center<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/muschealth.org\/black-river-medical-center\">Medical University of South Carolina Black River<\/a> will refer diabetic or pre-diabetic patients to VeggieRx for six months and a prescription will be sent electronically to the local FoodShare hub. A VeggieRx coordinator from the local FoodShare hub will contact the referred patients and make sure they have access to transportation to pick up their boxes at their local FoodShare county hub.
