Plus: Produce Prescription Program Spotlight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What they do:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/ucsd.edu\/\"> University of California San Diego (UCSD)<\/a>\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/masfrescoplusproduce.org\/\"> \u00a1M\u00e1s Fresco! Plus<\/a> program brings fresh, local produce to San Diego County residents who are experiencing food insecurity and diet-related chronic diseases. It is an expansion of UCSD\u2019s original<a href=\"https:\/\/masfresco.org\/\"> \u00a1M\u00e1s Fresco!<\/a> nutrition incentive program, which requires that participants be enrolled in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdss.ca.gov\/calfresh\"> CalFresh<\/a> (California\u2019s food benefit program). The expanded program does not require CalFresh membership for participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on participants\u2019 needs, they receive one of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A produce box delivered to their door twice a month for 12 months, valued at $50 per month<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A healthy food card loaded with $50 per month to purchase healthy foods &#8211; including fresh, prepackaged, canned, and frozen fruits and vegetables, as well as nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, and whole grains &#8211; from participating stores.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Approximately 2,500 households will participate in the program over three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program is part of a UCSD research study to determine how nutrition incentives impact access to healthy foods and the consumption of fruits and vegetables. Key outcomes measured include changes in fruit and vegetable access and consumption, food security, and self-reported health status, measured via pre- and post-participation surveys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How they do it:<\/strong> \u00a1M\u00e1s Fresco! Plus was developed by the UCSD<a href=\"https:\/\/ucsdcommunityhealth.org\/\"> Center for Community Health<\/a> at the<a href=\"https:\/\/actri.ucsd.edu\/\"> Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute<\/a>. The Center for Community Health collaborates with the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegocounty.gov\/hhsa\/\"> County of San Diego Health &amp; Human Services Agency<\/a> &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegocounty.gov\/content\/sdc\/hhsa\/programs\/ssp.html\"> Self-Sufficiency Programs<\/a>, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/\"> American Heart Association<\/a>, the<a href=\"https:\/\/sdcoi.org\/\"> San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative Community Council<\/a>, and various San Diego County community-based organizations (CBOs) to run the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staff at clinics and CBOs conduct community outreach and recruitment to identify participants, provide program referrals, and facilitate the enrollment process. The individuals they recommend must be people at least 18 years old with a San Diego County mailing address who could benefit from increased access to fruits and vegetables. One individual per household may participate, and past participants are not allowed to re-enroll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After an individual receives a referral to the program, he or she can<a href=\"https:\/\/ucsd.co1.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_9EIPkxaa0ZVsik6?Q_Language=EN&amp;Assisted=No&amp;Test=No\"> enroll online<\/a> (enrollment is at capacity for the current year) or call or e-mail to have a program staff member help with enrollment. Once their enrollment is completed, participants will receive either a produce box delivery from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodshedsmallfarmdistro.com\/\"> Foodshed Cooperative Inc.<\/a> or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yasukochifamilyfarms.com\/\"> Yasukochi Family Farms<\/a>, or a healthy food card from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodsmart.com\/\"> Foodsmart<\/a>. Retailers that accept the healthy food card include<a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertsons.com\/\"> Albertson\u2019s<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.food4less.com\/\"> Food4Less<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ralphs.com\/\"> Ralph\u2019s<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vons.com\/\"> Vons<\/a>, and<a href=\"http:\/\/walmart.com\/\"> Walmart<\/a> locations in San Diego County. Food cards are automatically loaded with $50 at the beginning of each month, and unused funds from previous months will roll over to the next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mission:<\/strong> To increase access to and consumption of healthy foods in order to improve health and nutrition status among individuals with food insecurity and\/or diet-related chronic diseases, while also supporting local farmers and retailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Major Funding:<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegocounty.gov\/general\/bos.html\"> County of San Diego Board of Supervisors<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Profit\/nonprofit: <\/strong>Nonprofit<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Annual Budget:<\/strong> $1,000,000<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Interesting fact about how it is working to positively affect health: <\/strong>\u00a1M\u00e1s Fresco! Plus serves many of the most vulnerable populations in San Diego County, including racial and ethnic minorities, immigrants and refugees, seniors, individuals with disabilities or other chronic illnesses, and low-income residents.
