To dispel some of the many myths and rumors we did a bit of research and also reached out to a world renowned expert, Taraneh Shirazian, M.D., an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at NYU School of Medicine, and the founder of Saving Mothers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How much weight should I gain?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/hmd\/~\/media\/Files\/Report%20Files\/2009\/Weight-Gain-During-Pregnancy-Reexamining-the-Guidelines\/Report%20Brief%20-%20Weight%20Gain%20During%20Pregnancy.pdf\">Institute of Medicine<\/a>, a woman who is of normal body weight or body mass index should gain between 25 and 35 pounds. A woman who is normally underweight should gain between 28 and 40 pounds during pregnancy. If you begin your pregnancy overweight or obese, you should pay specific attention to your weight-gain in order to minimize pregnancy-related complications. A woman who begins pregnancy overweight should gain 15 to 25 pounds, while a woman who is obese should gain between 11 and 20 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What seems to be the best way to lose weight after giving birth?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Focus on a healthy diet that is full of the nutrients your body needs while also low in unhealthy fats, sodium, and calories. Some studies have shown that breastfeeding helps with weight loss because women who breastfeed burn roughly 500 more calories per day than those who don\u2019t breastfeed. Drink plenty of water and exercise. (If you had a Cesarean section be sure to consult your doctor before starting exercise.) Finally, get as much sleep as you can.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the healthiest foods to eat during pregnancy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Foods high in iron, such as spinach, broccoli<strong>, <\/strong>beans, 100 percent whole grains, eggs, and peanut butter<\/li>\n<li>Asparagus has lots of nutrients, including vitamin B<sub>6, <\/sub>folic acid, thiamin, fiber, and potassium, which can help regulate blood pressure<\/li>\n<li>Make sure to take prenatal vitamins. Baby needs nutrients for healthy growth.<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re already eating a balanced diet, aim for 300 extra calories each day (6 to 8 ounces of food high in protein, such as eggs, red meat, chicken, fish, beans, cheese, nuts and dairy foods)<\/li>\n<li>You need 1000 mg of calcium each day (from milk, yogurt, cheddar or Swiss cheese, broccoli and greens)<\/li>\n<li>Have four 1-ounce servings of 100 percent whole grain bread or cereal, 4 to 5 servings of fruits and vegetables everyday<\/li>\n<li>Oranges and other fruits, such as berries, papayas and kiwi, which are high in vitamin C<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What should I avoid during pregnancy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/reproductivehealth\/TobaccoUsePregnancy\/index.htm\">Smoking during pregnancy<\/a> is the single most preventable cause of illness and death among mothers and infants.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/fasd\/alcohol-use.html\">Alcohol<\/a>: Alcohol passes through the placenta so when you drink, your unborn baby drinks with you. There is no known safe amount of alcohol to drink while pregnant.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid harmful drugs and medications; consult your obstetrician before continuing any prescribed medications.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid unpasteurized juices and dairy products such as raw milk and cheese, as well as raw fish, meat, and eggs, because they may contain bacteria that can be harmful to the baby.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid deli meats and soft cheeses such as Brie and feta. They may also have harmful bacteria.<\/li>\n<li>Eat less than 12 ounces of fish a week and avoid swordfish, tilefish, shark and king mackerel, which may contain very high levels of mercury. Types of fish that are okay to eat include salmon, shrimp, and sardines. Fish is high in omega 3- fatty acids and is good for your baby\u2019s brain and eye development.<\/li>\n<li>Limit caffeine intake to 1 to 2 cups of coffee per day. Keep in mind that other products, including chocolate, soda and OTC drugs, also have caffeine such as.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid trans fats (margarine, commercial baked goods, processed snack foods with vegetable shortening or partially hydrogenated oil)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What should I do if I am too nauseated to eat?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nausea is very common early in pregnancy and usually goes away after the third month. Here are some strategies for battling morning sickness:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eat crackers or dry toast before getting out of bed.<\/li>\n<li>Try to move slowly in the morning.<\/li>\n<li>Drink fluids between meals instead of with meals. Avoid fried foods and very spicy foods.<\/li>\n<li>Eat many small meals a day<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What about hydration?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Institute of Medicine recommends that women in temperate climates consume 12 to 13 glasses of water a day. Stay away from alcohol, avoid sugary beverages, and limit caffeinated drinks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which vitamins and nutrients do pregnant women need most?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/folicacid\"><strong>Folic Acid<\/strong><\/a><strong>: Folic acid is a B vitamin that can help prevent major birth defects. Take a vitamin containing 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid every day, before and during pregnancy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the best forms of exercise during pregnancy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Regular exercise has benefits for both you and the baby.<\/li>\n<li>Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise everyday<\/li>\n<li>If you are used to swimming, jogging or yoga, you can safely continue these<\/li>\n<li>Avoid exercise that can cause you to fall, such as horseback riding, skiing and contact sports<\/li>\n<li>Stretching, belly breathing, proper posture, relaxation are all beneficial<\/li>\n<li>Sitting on an exercise or birth ball can help with stomachaches and back pain. You can sit on it, lean on it or bounce on it to help relieve pain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What health complications can occur during pregnancy and how can I avoid them?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Obesity&#8211;<\/strong>Try to begin pregnancy at a healthy weight and monitor weight gain. \u00b7<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gestational diabetes&#8211;<\/strong>Control gestational diabetes with diet and exercise. Incorporate at least 30 minutes of exercise into your day everyday and avoid sweets, white bread and white pasta. Switch to fresh fruits and vegetables, brown rice, whole wheat bread and pasta<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Preeclampsia&#8211;<\/strong>If you have high blood pressure before pregnancy, get your blood pressure checked. Monitor your blood pressure frequently at home to ensure that it\u2019s under control. You may need blood pressure medication if it\u2019s not controlled. Preeclampsia, which is when a pregnant woman develops high blood pressure and large amounts of protein in the urine, can lead to health and delivery complications for you and your baby.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Preterm birth\u2014<\/strong>Make sure to start your prenatal care as soon as you know you are pregnant. If you\u2019ve already had a preterm birth you may need to see an expert in high-risk pregnancy. Call a healthcare provider if you notice any changes in vaginal discharge (water, mucus, blood, increased amount), pelvic\/lower abdominal pressure, constant low, dull back pain, mild cramps, contractions or ruptured membranes (water breaking).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Low energy levels&#8211;<\/strong>Take short naps and rests during the day. Sleep with extra pillows for support while sleeping on your side (best on your left side).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Constipation&#8211;<\/strong>Drink plenty of liquids. \u00a0Eat uncooked fruits and vegetables. Dried fruits and prune juice can help, too. Consume whole grain breads, cereals and bran. Exercise regularly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Frequent urination&#8211;<\/strong>Frequent urination is a common and normal side effect of pregnancy. If you feel burning or pain when you pee, talk to your doctor because you may have an infection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stress&#8211;<\/strong>According to the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, moderate levels of stress later in pregnancy are okay. Try to avoid stress early and throughout pregnancy by signing up for a yoga class or doing stretching and deep breathing exercises at home. Eat a healthy and balanced diet including omega-3 essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water per day, snack on nuts, fresh chicken\/turkey, seeds, eggs, yogurt and cheese). Try to incorporate 30 minutes of daily exercise into your life. Get enough sleep (go to bed earlier). Ask friends and loved ones for help. Cut back on chores and responsibilities. Do relaxing activities such reading or taking a nap. Join a support group. If you are doing these things and still feel overwhelmed, talk to your healthcare provider about getting additional help to manage stress and anxiety<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Heartburn&#8211;<\/strong>Fats can cause heartburn. Try to consume food that has been baked, grilled or broiled, and avoid fried foods. Drink half a cup of nonfat milk after meals and before lying down at night. This can help reduce the stomach acid that causes heartburn. Stay upright for an hour or so after eating<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Shortness of Breath&#8211;<\/strong>This may occur towards the end of pregnancy due to the growing uterus. Don\u2019t lie flat on your back when you sleep. Use an extra pillow at night and try to sleep on your left side. If the shortness of breath worsens, consult your physician.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lower back pain&#8211;<\/strong>Wear low-heeled shoes. Be aware of your posture. Do stretches that target the muscles in you lower back. Your back muscles work much harder during pregnancy to keep you upright.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Depression&#8211;<\/strong>Talk to a friend or family member. If you\u2019re not working or in school, try to schedule activities for yourself and consider joining a pregnancy group. He also has a law degree, and throughout his career has been dedicated to a multidisciplinary approach to academic research, community health interventions and complex health and policy issues, encompassing law, public health, and nutrition. Dr. Platkin has occupied influential roles in public health, notably serving as the Executive Director of the Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center from 2012 to 2023. During this time, he played a pivotal role in shaping food-related policies in New York City. His entrepreneurial leadership extends across multiple sectors: he is the co-founder and strategic advisor to Diversion Books (DiversionBooks.com), a book publishing company; Chief Strategy Officer at PopCom Health (PopComHealth.com); founder and managing director of Magoo Properties (MagooProperties.com); and co-founder and director of MedicalBx (MedicalBx.com), which develops boutique hospitals and mobile medical clinics to enhance healthcare access in underserved areas. His leadership also extended to co-founding and operating organizations like Integrated Wellness Solutions, where he leveraged innovative approaches and technology to enhance health and wellness.
