Airlines for America (A4A), the industry trade organization for the leading U.S. airlines, predicts that 28.5 million passengers will travel on U.S. airlines during the 12-day Thanksgiving travel period. This number is up 3 percent from 2016 and represents an increase of 69,000 daily passengers compared to the 2016 Thanksgiving travel period.<\/p>\n<p>Once again we contacted the airlines to request nutrition information for the foods they serve and make available for purchase to economy-class passengers on domestic flights and gathered data stored on websites and other online resources to bring you the 2017-2018 Airline Food Survey.<\/p>\n<h2>Major airline food headlines<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Delta is the clear leader among the major carries and is tied with Virgin America this year as the healthiest airline.<\/li>\n<li>The average number of calories per menu choice was 360 in 2012; in 2013 it was 388; in 2014 it was 397; in 2015 it was 400; in 2016 it was 392, and this year 405 calories, a 13 calorie increase over last year. Keep in mind, calories are not everything; we are looking at the nutrients in these foods when they are provided, as well as innovations moving towards healthy, tasty, inexpensive, sustainable foods.<\/li>\n<li>Alaska Air purchased Virgin America, and the goal is to maintain the status-quo when it comes to food in all categories until next year.<\/li>\n<li>American and Delta have once again started offering complimentary meals in economy class on domestic flights, something we haven&#8217;t seen in more than 15 years.<\/li>\n<li>Airlines are eliminating those oversized packages of snack foods and offering individual smaller packages or eliminating individual snacks altogether.<\/li>\n<li>Some airlines are going back to serving individual complimentary snacks, but they\u2019re not very healthy. How about an apple or an orange, or maybe a Clementine or a Halo (mandarin orange).<\/li>\n<li>The &#8220;Shame on You&#8221; award goes to Hawaiian and United Airlines. Hawaiian just does not respond while United\u2019s food and beverage department seems put-out by the process, and it shows in their responses to queries. American Airlines is not too far behind with a media rep who also seems put-out by the process.<\/li>\n<li>Note to all airlines: It is not difficult to get nutritional information for all foods. It is the clear leader among the big carriers by a long shot. While calories are surely not everything, it\u2019s always nice to see a decrease; the overall calories are down from 527 to 480. Meals are down from 628 to 559. Delta has also eliminated many of its individual paid snacks, however the free offerings are relatively low in calories yet are still not the great choices, other than the almonds. <\/p>\n<p>Delta continues its commitment to improving its food in terms of health and consciousness. Its menu continues to focus on \u201ctransparency into ingredient and allergen information for customers,\u201d and its focus on transparency includes providing a key on the menu for snack items that are Non-GMO, Vegan, Gluten-Free, Kosher, and Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian. Also, the Tapas box is the U.S. airline industry\u2019s only non-GMO snack box. Delta continues to work with Luvo which has a very strong commitment to healthy eating. <\/p>\n<p>All the calorie information for the Luvo items are listed on Delta\u2019s menu (and online); I\u2019m just not sure why the airline doesn\u2019t put all nutritional information for all its food on the website and pocket cards&#8211;why not? List ingredients, as well as fats, proteins, carbohydrates and sugar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Bets:<\/strong> For a snack, the almonds are the best choice&#8211;even over the Kind bar, or the lower-calorie pretzels. The vegan, GMO-free Tapas Snack Box is a good healthy choice if you share or make it a meal (it\u2019s too high in calories as a snack). Within the box the best bests are the Super Seed Crackers, Snapea Crisps, dark chocolate, almonds, hummus, and quinoa with pepper dip. You can pass on the rest.<\/p>\n<p>For morning travel, choose the continental breakfast (fruit and yogurt). It\u2019s 345 calories, but save the Kind bar for a snack later in the day. For Lunch\/Dinner, choose the Sesame Noodle Salad or the Greek Meze Plate. The good news is that Alaska Air is committed to adopting the healthy food options (and transparency) of Virgin America. Additionally, Alaska will more than likely reduce the sizes of the individual snaaks. Virgin is still the only airline that provides nutritional information (not just calories) for every all items. <\/p>\n<p>We applaud that transparency and hope Alaska continues to do so. There are not many menu changes (obviously because of the transition). The individual snacks are still unhealthy. They have 9 snacks, and should offer healthier options. Believe me, no one will complain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Bets:<\/strong> Avoid the individual snacks if you can. Even the nuts, which are the best choice, are high in calories if you consume the entire package. Always choose a real meal if you can, even if it&#8217;s slightly more calories, it will keep you full longer.<\/p>\n<p>For breakfast try the Udi&#8217;s Granola with Yogurt and Fruit, which is a bit high in sugar but overall low in calories at 330. The best snack box is the Protein Meal with hummus, nuts and tuna; the others are a bit high in calories and are not really worth it. For kids, skip the Jet Set Kid Pack if you can, and go for the half peanut butter and jam sandwich. In general, almost all the meals (as long as they\u2019re eaten as meals and not snacks) are good choices. The Quinoa Wrap at 420 calories is high in protein for a vegetarian meal, which will help keep you full longer. <\/p>\n<p>The Protein Plate is also a good choice, as is the Farro Salad with roasted chicken \u2013 powerful from a health perspective. Again, these are meals that will fill you up and help you avoid the junk. It would change the face of the airline. JetBlue should note that people are very serious about what they eat and are extremely conscious of choosing healthier, organic, non-GMO, nutritious foods. Finally, the airline should offer actual meals on more flights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Bets:<\/strong> Still not too much in the way of healthy individual snacks. So keep in mind, the individual snacks are free, and the JetBlue team is generally friendly and will not say no to requests for extra portions. As for the Eat Up boxes, the Pick Me Up box is lowest in calories but not necessarily the most nutritious. The Amp Up box features hummus, Mary\u2019s Gone Crackers and almonds, and while it\u2019s high in calories, it\u2019s loaded with good nutrition (e.g. fiber and protein).<\/p>\n<p>Have it as a meal though, not as a snack, and skip the chocolate crispy squares to reduce low-nutrient calories. If you\u2019re on a flight that offers the Eat Up Caf\u00e9, the Yogurt and Granola (you might want to limit the honey), the Kale &amp; Quinoa Salad and the Spicy Soba &amp; Korean-Style Chicken (unless you\u2019re sodium sensitive) are all good choices. Fresh and Light Meals are a step in a better direction, but for a major US airline, American is very far behind when it comes to food. The airline\u2019s leadership needs to get in touch and start offering healthier, cleaner foods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Bets:<\/strong> The hummus box is the best bet among snacks for purchase. If you opt to purchase a lunch, on flights of three hours or more the Chicken Arugula Wrap seems to be the best option &#8212; go light on the dressing. If you opt to purchase breakfast, the Egg and Turkey Bacon Sandwich is OK as long as you go light on the honey mustard dressing. <\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re on a flight with complimentary breakfast, opt for the Snack Box with yogurt and granola, which is just acceptable healthwise, and steer clear of the fruit and cheese plate. He also has a law degree, and throughout his career has been dedicated to a multidisciplinary approach to academic research, community health interventions and complex health and policy issues, encompassing law, public health, and nutrition. Dr. Platkin has occupied influential roles in public health, notably serving as the Executive Director of the Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center from 2012 to 2023. During this time, he played a pivotal role in shaping food-related policies in New York City. His entrepreneurial leadership extends across multiple sectors: he is the co-founder and strategic advisor to Diversion Books (DiversionBooks.com), a book publishing company; Chief Strategy Officer at PopCom Health (PopComHealth.com); founder and managing director of Magoo Properties (MagooProperties.com); and co-founder and director of MedicalBx (MedicalBx.com), which develops boutique hospitals and mobile medical clinics to enhance healthcare access in underserved areas. His leadership also extended to co-founding and operating organizations like Integrated Wellness Solutions, where he leveraged innovative approaches and technology to enhance health and wellness. He is a powerful advocate for healthier communities and for shaping the field of nutrition and food policy in lasting ways. Dr. Platkin has made significant contributions to the field of public health and nutrition issues through his research. He has published in several peer-reviewed scientific and medical journals, including the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, the Journal of Obesity and Weight Loss, the International Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics, BioMed Central (BMC) Obesity; and the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. He is the author of eight books. His forthcoming book, Eat to Cheat Death: Using Food as Medicine to Live Better, Live Stronger, Live Healthier, and Live Longer (Simon &amp; Schuster, 2027), synthesizes cutting-edge research on nutrition and longevity. His first book, Breaking the Pattern (Red Mill Press 2002, Plume 2004), was a bestseller in hardcover; it has been used by addiction clinics to assist patients with resolving drug and alcohol-related issues, and more than 20 universities around the country use it as a text to teach behavioral change techniques to nutrition and dietetic counseling interns. His other titles include The Diet Detective's Count Down (Simon and Schuster, 2007), The Diet Detective's Calorie Bargain Bible (Simon and Schuster, 2008), The Diet Detective's Diet Starter Kit (Diversion, 2011), and The Diet Detective's All-American Diet (Rodale, 2012). Charles Platkin's contributions to the fields of health, nutrition, and public policy have earned him recognition and numerous accolades. He was cited by the New York State Governor for his contributions to the development of nutrition materials for NYS Mentoring in March 2019, showcasing his dedication to public health and education. He was also honored as a Politics of Food honoree by City &amp; State in November 2018 for his commitment to promoting healthy eating and food policy reform. Additionally, Dr. Platkin's success as a principal investigator and grant recipient reflects his impact in the field, as he has secured multiple grants to support research and initiatives related to food policy and nutrition. Beyond his academic and research pursuits, Charles Platkin has engaged with the public through various media outlets. He was the host and executive producer of WE TV's series I Want To Save Your Life, where he helped individuals transform their health through nutrition and lifestyle interventions. His syndicated health, nutrition, and fitness column, the Diet Detective, appeared in more than 150 daily newspapers and media outlets for nearly 20 years. His appearances on thousands of radio shows, in newspapers, magazines, and online platforms have reached a broad audience. His commitment to educating the public underscores his dedication to public health.
