There is a dizzying array of claims displayed on food labels these days, drawing attention to the food\u2019s \u201clow sodium\u201d content or indicating that it\u2019s \u201csugar free.\u201d And what does <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodmedcenter.org\/zh_cn\/natural-fresh-and-organic-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">natural mean these days anyway?<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12889-019-7622-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that nutrition claims making foods seem healthier than they are can influence consumer purchases. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11747-019-00663-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additional research also found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that consumers rely heavily on information presented on the front of the package rather than reading the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/nutrition-education-resources-materials\/how-understand-and-use-nutrition-facts-label\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nutrition Facts Panel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which may be on the side or the back. Therefore, it is crucial to understand what all of those front-of-package claims actually mean.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some claims on food packages have no regulated definition; however, many are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/dietary-supplements-guidance-documents-regulatory-information\/dietary-supplement-labeling-guide-chapter-vi-claims\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsis.usda.gov\/wps\/portal\/fsis\/topics\/regulatory-compliance\/labeling\/Claims-Guidance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)<\/a> which have specific guidelines that must be followed.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/industry\/food-and-beverages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal Trade Commission (FTC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> oversees food advertising and food marketing. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/public-statements\/1994\/05\/enforcement-policy-statement-food-advertising\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food Advertising Enforcement Policy Statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> specifies guidelines for packaged food advertising and prohibits \u201cdeceptive\u201d advertising claims that provide misleading information or failure to provide fact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FTC does not allow claims without substantial evidence, but with no specific list of approved or unapproved claims, there is a large gray area concerning what is or isn\u2019t allowed. For example, there are plenty of food products that claim they are \u201cbetter than the leading brand\u201d without identifying what the leading brand is or providing an incomplete comparison by claiming a product as \u201cthe best\u201d without explaining why or in what way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is a food claim?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/food-labeling-nutrition\/label-claims-conventional-foods-and-dietary-supplements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three categories of food claims<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that appear on food labels:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK209851\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nutrient content claims<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refer to the amount of nutrients within a food, such as \u201clow sodium\u201d or \u201cgood source of calcium.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/scripts\/cdrh\/cfdocs\/cfcfr\/cfrsearch.cfm?fr=101.65\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nutrient content claims are regulated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in terms of how large they can be printed on labels and address nutrients such as sugar, sodium, fat, calories, cholesterol, and vitamins and minerals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/webdocs\/publications\/42215\/5840_aib750k_1_.pdf?v=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health claims<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggest a correlation between food and a health condition such as hypertension or heart disease. Health claims must provide substantial scientific evidence to prove their validity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/food-labeling-nutrition\/structurefunction-claims#conventional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Structure-function claims<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">describe the effect a nutrient within the packaged food has on a physiological function, such as \u201ccalcium builds strong bones.\u201d Manufacturers must submit the exact wording to the FDA and the package must include a disclaimer stating that the FDA has not evaluated the claims.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK209851\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>What do the food claims mean?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cGood source\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If one serving of a food contains ten percent to 19 percent of the daily value of a certain nutrient, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK209851\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is considered a \u201cgood source\u201d of that nutrient<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With this claim, the words \u201ccontains\u201d and \u201cprovides\u201d can be used interchangeably.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cExcellent source\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK209851\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An \u201cexcellent source\u201d claim can be used for <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a food that has at least 20 percent of the daily value of a certain nutrient in a single serving. This claim can be worded as \u201chigh in\u201d or \u201crich in\u201d as well. Only nutrients that have recommended daily intakes can carry this claim. Other nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids, cannot.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLow\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLow\u201d can refer to calories, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, or sugar. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK209851\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For each nutrient, the definition differs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low fat: three grams or less per serving<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low-saturated fat: one gram or less per serving with no more than 15 percent of total<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calories coming from saturated fat<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low sodium: 140 milligrams or less per serving<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very low sodium: 35 milligrams or less per serving<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low cholesterol: 20 milligrams or less per serving and only when a food contains two grams or less of saturated fat per serving<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low calorie: 40 calories or less per serving<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLight\u201d or \u201clite\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For foods with 50 percent or more of their calories coming from fat, versions of the same food produced with no more than half of its original fat content <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK209851\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can be labeled as \u201clight\u201d or \u201clite.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A food with less than 50 percent of its calories from fat can be labeled as \u201clight\u201d or \u201clite\u201d when its total number of calories is reduced by at least one third and its fat content is reduced by at least 50 percent compared to the original version of the food product.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFree\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term \u201cfree\u201d is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK209851\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regulated by the FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and means that\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fat free: a food that contains fewer than 0.5 grams of fat per serving<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sugar free: a food that contains fewer than 0.5 grams of sugar per serving<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gluten free: a food that contains fewer than 20 parts per million of gluten<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhole\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no regulation or specific definition for the term \u201cwhole\u201d, which generally refers to foods that are minimally processed or without added ingredients, whole foods generally include fresh produce, meat, dairy, fish, and whole grains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;No antibiotics\u201d or \u201craised without antibiotics\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsis.usda.gov\/wps\/portal\/fsis\/topics\/food-safety-education\/get-answers\/food-safety-fact-sheets\/food-labeling\/meat-and-poultry-labeling-terms\/meat-and-poultry-labeling-terms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regulated by the USDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this term is used exclusively for red meat, poultry, and eggs. In order to use this claim, producers must provide documentation that the animal was raised without the use of antibiotics\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNo hormones added\u201d or \u201cno hormones administered\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormone usage is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsis.usda.gov\/wps\/portal\/fsis\/topics\/food-safety-education\/get-answers\/food-safety-fact-sheets\/food-labeling\/meat-and-poultry-labeling-terms\/meat-and-poultry-labeling-terms\/!ut\/p\/a1\/jZFRb4IwEMc_DY-lx3AG90ZIFmUTZsxm5WUpehSS0pK2jrhPP9wyExed9p569_vn7v5HC8poofhHI7hrtOLy8C_G77CAcTBJIM0nwSPMsrdF_pQkEC3vB2D9D5CFN-ovvBiu6dMbGtyZeTIXtOi4q0mjKk2ZQEe4sj0aS1ml9ZZYXqHbk4pvHLE1ovstSF6ibJSgrEV-UG1Jp3fSmf2xRBya1l4HVrQ4HReCIWZZuBxN0yyEfPQXOOPnD3DZsMERIXX5fbx1rMowGlY3WKFB4-_MkK6d6-yDBx70fe8LrYVEf6NbD85Jam0dZack7dpX9vkcT6F5aVeRjb8Ay-NlYw!!\/#16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regulated by the USDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and varies depending on the type of animal. The claim \u201cno hormones administered\u201d can appear on a beef label if the producer can prove that no hormones were used in raising the cattle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cProcessed\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A claim that is often misunderstood, processed is defined by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ajcn\/article\/99\/6\/1525\/4577499\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to mean that a food that has undergone \u201ca change of character.\u201d Often \u201cprocessed\u201d is understood to refer to packaged foods that are generally unhealthy. But processed foods also include those with high nutrient contents, such as roasted nuts (rather than unprocessed raw nuts), tofu (rather than unprocessed edamame), and canned green beans (rather than fresh green beans).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOrganic\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nycfoodpolicy.org\/is-the-organic-label-as-valuable-as-you-thought\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term \u201corganic\u201d refers to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> how the food was produced rather than the characteristics of the food itself. Only food producers that comply with the USDA standards, which require that\u00a0 the crops are produced \u201cwithout pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, bioengineering or ionizing radiation,\u201d can call their foods \u201ccertified organic.\u201d Organically raised animals must be given exclusively organic feed, kept free from growth hormones and antibiotics, and have access to the outdoors. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ams.usda.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/media\/Importing%20Organic%20Products%20Factsheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Organic Program (NOP), part of the USDA\u2019s Agricultural Marketing Service<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requires that imported organic products have to be certified by the USDA organic standards or an authorized international standard in order to be sold in the United States. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ams.usda.gov\/rules-regulations\/organic\/nosb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Organic Standards Board<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, made up of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ams.usda.gov\/rules-regulations\/organic\/nosb\/current-members\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14 scientists, environmentalists, and public interest advocates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, oversees the USDA\u2019s \u201corganic\u201d label and its requirements.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It can be challenging to decipher how healthy certain packaged foods might be and decide what to buy in the supermarket.
